Tum Tiki live video from the GNRS

From the Suede Palace at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, CA. Filmed by our friends at the Lost in Paradise YouTube channel.

A sneak peek into the new record, here's one called TUM TIKI!

A big Finale at the Grand National Roadster Show

For the 8 years that The Hula Girls have worked as a band, we've been lucky to have lots of different dancers perform with us along the way;

Miss Ruby Champagne...

Miss Betsy Bosen...

Miss Dinah DeRosa...

Three girls, in particular, took the 'Girls of The Hula Girls' to a different place. Neva Moore, Judy Luck, and Audrie Loraine are three friends who really embraced their roles in the band.

Judy and Audrie go all the way back to 2010, and though Neva was around during much of that time, she became a Hula Girl in just the last couple of years.

We were sincerely fortunate to have the three girls as a part of the group for as long as they were.

The girls are all hanging up their hula skirts after the show at the Grand National Roadster Show on Sunday. Personal and life reasons have brought them to this decision and we wholeheartedly support them in this. It's a lot of work being a Hula Girl. Audrie said to me recently, "I think what will be more fun for me now is sitting with my husband and enjoying a drink while we watch The Hula Girls."

Join us on Sunday at noon, in the Suede Palace at the Grand National Roadster Show (Fairplex in Pomona) for one last show with Audrie and Neva.

After the GNRS show, The Hula Girls will return in March, at Don the Beachcomber.

Thursday and Friday night!

The Hula Girls are very excited to help welcome a brand new tiki mug to Roxanne's/ Exhibition Room in Long Beach, CA! From 9 - midnight, we'll be playing three sets of music with our friends, the Ding Dong Devils, playing two set in between. The show also features an art show by mug designer, and super nice guy, Mr. Doug Horne! Come, join the scene!

Then, on Friday night, we are back in the Dagger Bar at our home bar, Don the Beachcomber. As always, we play from 9 till midnight and it's free! Late night happy hour starts at 11:30. Bonus!

Side note:

Our buddy, John Doe (from the legendary punk rock band, X), will be playing in the Hidden Village with James Intveld. I think they're both playing acoustic. I'm hoping to pop in on our breaks!

I've done a lot of design work for X in the past. Just one of the best, most interesting punk rock bands ever....

The Royal Hawaiian

Facebook just reminded me that 7 years ago, The Hula Girls played what would end up as one of the saddest events in southern California tiki history. The grand reopening of the recently remodeled Royal Hawaiian. That should be a joyous event, right?!

Built in 1947 and busily humming along for 62 years, the longtime owner family 'cashed in' on that Laguna Beach property.

New investors thought that 'updating' the decor would be a good idea. Tiki bars thrive with dark, 'outdated', confined and cozy interiors. Low ceilings, tight hallways, dusty old pufferfish lamps, tiki dioramas... It had it all.

The remodel felt akin to a Hawaiian-themed Denny's. No joke. Diner booths upholstered in a tropical-ish print, brightly lit, fresh white walls, several giant TVs...
And shortly thereafter, it closed forever.

They blamed it on the economy, the fact that they couldn't get a live music permit... But somehow, the Royal Hawaiian had previously survived several economic roller coaster rides since the '40s, all the time without live music. Sooo... Yeah.

Don the Beachcomber this Sat! 12/05/15

We're back in the Dagger Bar this Saturday night! 9 - midnight with the late night happy hour starting at 11pm. We'll have our hula-a-go-go dancers as well. Aaand... Kevin Stewart of Big Sandy and the Flyrite Boys will be on bass!

As always, it's free! Come early to grab a good seat.
Aloha!
